Daniel was startled to see a man leaving the house while he was still screaming, with the older woman trailing him. “Arnold, all you’ve spoken about is buying this house! I begged you to come help me! Are you deranged? Do you want my house to pass away so you can inherit it?”

Daniel raised an eyebrow and felt he needed to move on, but he was firmly planted.

He recoiled at the sound of metal hitting metal all of a sudden. “What the –”

Mother, you’re acting like a drama queen. I will still own this house. It’s unbelievable that you treated me like way when I arrived to assist you with your move.”

“Why?”

“All right… I requested him to come and assist me since I’m moving into a nursing home. But his entire purpose in coming here was to ask to be given the house. He declared that he would move in here. But since he doesn’t place the same value on investments as I do, I know he’s just going to sell it. I’m not selling this home as long as I’m living since I worked hard to earn it,” Mrs. Carrino disclosed. “But when I asked him to water my plants, he became really dramatic. I think you witnessed the remainder of the altercation.”

Daniel shrugged and remarked, “I can handle that.”

“Do what?”

“Water your plants.”

“I can’t pay you, dear,” Mrs. Carrino murmured, regrettingfully looking into her eyes.

“I am aware. However, I live very close. Daniel emphasized, “It’s not a problem,” to which the elder woman responded with a cheery smile.

Mrs. Carrino moved into a nearby Florida nursing home a few days later, and Daniel honored his commitment. He was glad to water her plants when he went to her house virtually every day. He soon developed a passion for gardening and would go see Mrs. Carrino to inquire about adding more plants.

“Obviously! She winked at Daniel, not sure why she was being so sly, but she whispered, “And make sure to watch out for the soil.”

In an attempt to alleviate his family’s hardship, Daniel started expanding the garden by purchasing more plants and imagining how wonderful it would be to launch a gardening business in the future. To provide for him and his siblings’ food and rent, his mother worked two jobs during the week and one job on the weekends. However, it was insufficient.

He only owned a bike because he had taken on side jobs to fix an old one he had discovered. However, gardening provided him with a reprieve from his financial concerns, and he felt fantastic after planting a new plant and seeing it flourish. One day, he never imagined what he would find in the garden.

He had read that azaleas did well in Florida’s climate, so he had acquired several and begun using a little shovel to dig in a particular area of the lawn. He recoiled at the sound of metal hitting metal all of a sudden. “What the –”

He dropped the shovel and dug up a mason jar with a metal lid with his hands, discovering a message inside.

“Hello, Daniel! You now own this residence, thank you for your assistance! Look inside and locate all of the documents. You are welcome to move in whenever you and your family choose.”

Despite his disbelieving gaze, Daniel quickly entered the house with the key Mrs. Carrino had given him. He noticed the house’s title on the kitchen counter. He could hardly make out what was written, but at the bottom he spotted his name.

He called Mrs. Carrino, who confirmed everything, while he was still in disbelief. “To finish the transfer, you will have to sign it. But I wanted the note to be found by you first.” stated Mrs. Carrino.

His mother found it hard to believe. They can move into the home and cease making rent payments. Additionally, there was no mortgage, which would greatly benefit his family. The elder woman’s present was so appreciated by them that his mother and other siblings began to see her frequently, treating her like a grandmother.

However, Daniel found something much more intriguing when they were moving. Another note found in Mrs. Carrino’s old room. The only difference between it and the one he had found was that it said “Arnold.” In reality, the older woman intended to give her son the house in exchange for his assistance with her plants. However, she had second thoughts, and for being so considerate, Daniel was given a sizable gift.

He would never forget the lesson he learned.

What lessons may we draw from this tale?

Make your goal to be Daniel, not Arnold. Arnold wanted his mother’s house, nothing more. He just claimed to want to help her. Daniel, on the other hand, did it just out of kindness.

Never feel as though you’re entitled to an inheritance. Although the majority of parents enjoy showing their kids the fruits of their labor, kids shouldn’t ever feel entitled to it. Arnold was mistaken when he thought he was inheriting his mother’s home.
